FOOTAGE
A RARE WINDOW INTO THE PAST
Step back in time with this
exclusive and rare footage recorded in 1993 aboard the USS Belknap (CG-26), the
lead ship of her class of guided missile cruisers in the United States Navy.
This video offers a unique and
authentic look at daily life onboard a Cold War-era U.S. Navy warship, just two
years before her decommissioning.
📚 THE USS BELKNAP: A BRIEF HISTORY
The USS Belknap holds a
significant place in United States naval history. Originally commissioned in
1964 as DLG-26 (a guided missile frigate), the ship was later reclassified as a
guided missile cruiser (CG-26) in 1975.
For three decades, Belknap
served with distinction, participating in numerous naval operations during the
Cold War era. However, her legacy also includes a dramatic and historical
incident:
In 1975, USS Belknap survived a
dramatic collision with the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the Ionian Sea — an
event that would become one of the most significant naval incidents of that
era. Despite the severe damage, Belknap was successfully repaired and returned
to service.
The ship was decommissioned in
1995 and later sunk as a target ship in 1998, concluding a remarkable 31-year
service record.

🎬 WHY THIS FOOTAGE IS RARE AND VALUABLE
This video is an exceptional
historical document for several reasons:
🎥 ORIGINAL HOME VIDEO
QUALITY: Recorded in 1993 on VHS by crew members or visitors, this footage
captures authentic, unfiltered daily life aboard a U.S. Navy cruiser. Unlike
official Navy documentaries, this shows the reality of shipboard life.
📸 DOCUMENTATION OF A
DECOMMISSIONED VESSEL: The USS Belknap was decommissioned just two years after
this footage was recorded (1995) and sunk as a target ship in 1998. This video
is one of the few surviving records of the ship's final operational years.
⚔️ COLD WAR ERA: The early 1990s
represented the twilight of the Cold War, making this a valuable snapshot of
U.S. Navy capabilities and operations during a critical historical period.
👥 HUMAN PERSPECTIVE:
Rather than focusing only on hardware and weapons systems, this footage
emphasizes the men and women who served aboard Belknap — their daily routines,
their camaraderie, and their dedication.
🚢 THE BELKNAP CLASS: NAVY WORKHORSES
The Belknap-class cruisers were
among the most important warships in the Cold War-era U.S. Navy. A total of
nine ships in the class were built between 1962 and 1974.
As the lead ship of her class,
USS Belknap (CG-26) served as a testbed and operational model for the entire
class. The design pioneered several advanced features:
• Advanced integrated combat systems
• Innovative hull design for improved seakeeping
• Efficient propulsion systems
• Superior damage control capabilities
💥 THE HISTORIC 1975 COLLISION: A
REMARKABLE SURVIVAL
One of the most dramatic moments
in Belknap's history occurred on June 1, 1975, in the Ionian Sea (Eastern
Mediterranean).
While operating as part of Task
Force 60, the USS Belknap collided with the aircraft carrier USS John F.
Kennedy (CV-67), which was 25 times heavier than Belknap. The impact caused
catastrophic damage to Belknap:
• Severe structural damage to the ship's stern and
superstructure
• Fire that required extensive firefighting efforts
• Loss of propulsion and steering capability
• Significant casualties among the crew
Despite the severity of the
damage, Belknap's crew demonstrated extraordinary seamanship and damage
control. The ship was successfully salvaged, towed back to port, and
extensively rebuilt. She returned to service and continued operating until her
decommissioning in 1995 — a testament to both the ship's design and the
dedication of her crews.
